The
Club has grown from a small informal group in the early 1950’s
as the Lake St-Louis Rifle Club to the Pointe-Claire Rifle and
Musket Club, and then was incorporated as the Pointe-Claire Rifle
Club Inc. in 1961. The location of the club was in a range in
the basement of Stewart Hall until 1995. During this period the
club developed with the implementation of strong leadership to
be a respected member of the competitive target shooter community.
The current facility was a range built in 1960 for use by the
Pointe Claire police department. Changes to the M.U.C. police
services no longer required these facilities and this made the
range available. The Club took on the task of supervising Cadet
Corps target shooting in this range and at the same time obtained
permission to start up a pistol section at this location.
In
1995 building improvements to Stewart Hall forced the Club to
relocate to the club’s pistol range at 401 St-Jean Boulevard and
combine its two disciplines in one smaller locale. The Club continues
to be an active one, constantly growing. It is one of the best
equipped in the Montreal area with a total membership near 175
members ranging in age from 12 to 79 years young.
Revenue
is derived from members in the form of membership fees, competitions,
sale of ammunition, crests, club clothing, etc. Profits are re-invested
in the Club by purchasing new equipment and improving the facilities.
The
Club is managed by a group of ten (10) Directors, all of whom work on a voluntary basis.
Their duties and responsibilities are outlined in the club’s by-laws.
Conduct
in the range is strictly controlled by qualified Range Officers
who have been selected by the Chief Range Officer who is in turn
one of the 10 Directors. These volunteers are responsible for
the safety during Club activities. These Range Officers are responsible
for conducting the shooting relays according to a strict code,
which is intended to maximize the safety aspect. These rules not
only surpass the Federal Firearms Safety recommendations, they
work, as there has never been an accident in our club.
The
Club has maintained its existence by co-operating with the City
of Pointe Claire’s mayor and councilors. Thanks to this lengthy
relationship we have enjoyed their support. In May 2000 the City
installed a new ventilation system in our range that will let
us enjoy practicing our sport for years to come.
The
Club prides itself in being very safety conscious and sharing
of information about our sport. The open atmosphere of sportsman’s
companionship has resulted in loyal, long-term memberships. Many
members have contributed to the efficient administration and maintenance
and local improvements of the Club.
In
co-operation with firearms control the Club provides its services
to the public. Several directors are R.C.M.P. qualified Verifiers
of firearms and with the help of the club’s computer will assist
anyone wanting to register their firearms.
